As NFL player protests dwindle with only 5 players protesting each of the past three weeks, it is heartening to see others joining the ranks of heroes with the courage to demonstrate during the national anthem. On Thursday night, San Francisco 49ers cheerleader Kayla Morris knelt during the national anthem before the 49ers played the Oakland Raiders. She is the first cheerleader of any professional sports team to protest during the national anthem. This protest is a powerful one; and a beacon highlighting the systemic racism that we continue to face as Black Americans, expressed during a ritual in which we are expected to pretend that its symbols represent us.
