One Down, One to Go: Carolina Panthers Sign Eric Reid

In a move that should have taken place the second pro bowl safety Eric Reid became a free agent, the Carolina Panthers have signed Reid, one of the top players at his position. Reid was also the face of protests during the national anthem during the 2017-2018 season. The former San Francisco 49er still has a grievance pending alleging a concerted effort to keep him out of the NFL. This claim was supported by questioning by the Cincinnati Bengals regarding his intent to continue protesting during the national anthem. The obvious next issue is the signing of Colin Kaepernick who remains unsigned despite his abilities which far surpass many of the quarterbacks signed by NFL teams over the course of the past 18 months. Rumors have circulated about interested teams, to include a cancelled visit with the Seattle Seahawks this past offseason, and even more recent intimations by Kaepernick’s counsel of the New England Patriots and Oakland Raiders considering calling in the quarterback. It appears that there may be residual effects to the Kaepernick Nike boon other than the burning of already purchased gear, or municipalities banning Nike gear and then rescinding said ill-conceived policies. The saga continues.
