Cornell School District board member Barbara Pessey shared an edited video which contained the cheerleaders, WWII clips, and depictions of crying veterans. The video alleged that Superintendent Aaron Hall deliberately invited veterans to perform the color guard knowing that the students intended to protest. Amid the fallout, the district superintendent Aaron Thomas and other administrators received hundreds of threatening phone calls, including death threats. The school’s homecoming dance was cancelled and the follow on football game was rescheduled and attendance limited to players’ families.

In addition to being briefly suspended, Bruton was informed that to remain at Bishop Gorman, he would have to remain on disciplinary contract for the remainder of the year; be banned from the football team and television broadcasts; and must “attend 5 counseling sessions,” “submit an essay on a topic to be determined by the administration,” and “submit a letter of apology to the Veterans in attendance at the assembly.” Bruton left Bishop Gorman High School.
