A young middle school student Marian Taylor was inspired by Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest against racism to kneel during the pledge of allegiance. In what has become an all too common response by school administrators, Mariana’s teacher reprimanded and humiliated Mariana for her decision. Despite the county school’s official statement essentially denying the incident took place, there is no indication of a motive by the student or her family to fabricate this story. Frankly, if this teacher is bold enough to act as a racist bully towards an 11-yr old girl, then she should be bold enough to own her behavior. Thus it appears that the teacher in question is not only ignorant, but cowardly as well. Pathetic.
The ACLU of Maryland is asking the Baltimore County school system to clarify its policies on student dissent after it says an 11-year-old girl at Catonsville Middle School was reprimanded by her teacher for “taking a knee” during the Pledge of Allegiance.
