Ervin had her security clearance suspended/revoked, which affected her ability to remain employed with a Department of Defense contractor. She was discharged from the Navy and fired by her civilian employer. Brandon Akins launched a petition in support of Ms. Ervin. Ervin protest resulted in intense backlash, including the use of racial slurs The U.S. Navy issued a message directly addressing national anthem observance requirements for Sailors.
