Three regents (Hal Daub, Jim Pillen, and Rob Schafer) expressed disagreement with the students’ protest. Daub asserted that the players should be kicked off the team, though later he said he’d been misquoted. Nebraska governor Pete Ricketts called the protest “disgraceful and disrespectful.” Online petition started by Nebraska alum Andy Liberman in support of the students.

19 unnamed members of the band	East Carolina University	October 1, 2016 NYdailynews.com Band	The university chancellor supported the students’ right to protest; however, the university’s Athletic Bands director, School of Music director, and College of Fine Arts and Communication dean issued a letter stating that further national anthem protests against racism by band members “would not be tolerated.” The university’s School of Social Work issued a statement in support of the students’ exercise of free speech and expression. North Carolina governor, Pat McCrory, stated that the students’ actions were “extremely inappropriate.” The president and Chief Executive Officer of the radio group that owns the local ESPN affiliate radio station, Jeff Andrulonis, refused to air ECU’s next football game in order to “protest the protest.” Game attendees assaulted band members, including spitting, throwing objects, etc.
